My grandfather — Ilmnur Mindiyarov (1878–1974)
My grandfather, Ilmnur Mindiyarov (1878–1974, the father of my mother, Gilemnurova Anfisa), was a contemporary of difficult eras. He lived through the path from the old order of the Russian Empire to Soviet Samarkand, keeping his faith and the light of knowledge.
He was a true enlightener and creator. Through years of repression and hardship he carried the most precious thing of all — the light of knowledge (Ilm) and the purity of the soul (Nur).
During the repressions of 1938, from his native village of Ishkarovo in Bashkiria to the land of Samarkand, he brought not resentment but creation. He brought with him knowledge and culture.
He taught literacy, was a mufassir, had a deep command of the Arabic language and taught the correct pronunciation of Arabic text. He gave warmth and opened windows to the world for everyone who wished to learn.
He did not merely give knowledge — he tempered character, preparing us for great heights and victories.
His name is now our motto. His life is our example. We make history with our own minds, just as he bequeathed to us.
